New Child and Babysitting Safety Program Now Available

The new ASHI and MEDIC First Aid Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program is here. Our first co-branded program, this updated program features new video and student materials made specifically for the teen and young adult audience.

The YouTube “vlogger” style presentation of the video brings a youthful and high-energy spirit to the program content presentation, and the colorful magazine format of the student book make CABS a unique offering in our training program portfolio. The updated program contains new information on contemporary safety concerns as it reviews best practices for safe and successful babysitting.

As a co-branded ASHI and MEDIC First Aid training program, MEDIC First Aid Training Centers wishing to offer CABS will no longer need to become authorized ASHI training providers.

The video is available in DVD and streaming formats, as well as offline via the Desktop Video Player. Also new for this version of CABS:

  • The program is available as a blended class.

  • In addition to the traditional print book and certification card, CABS certification materials are now available in sheets of five enhanced cards, or as digital cards. For those TCs offering CABS using the ‘card-only’ option, you can create a “library” of printed student books to hand out during class and simply purchase print or digital completion cards for your students.

This fun and comprehensive program covers:

  • Babysitting as a business, so students learn everything they need to know to get started earning that extra cash

  • Safety and injury prevention guidelines, with best practices to make sure that everyone stays safe

  • Leadership strategies to build confidence when responding to conflict, as well as suggestions on how to avoid conflicts from the outset

  • Tips on age-appropriate play, and how to build rapport and stay engaged with children

  • Basic caregiving skills such as feeding, burping, diapering, and safe sleep practices

  • Basic first aid for common incidents

Here’s a taste of what your students will find in the program that will help them be ready to go on Day One of their babysitting adventure:

Program Preview: Meet the Family

You may already be familiar with the family that has hired you, but there are details specific to babysitting that can be very helpful when preparing for a job. Have an orientation with the family before you babysit. Your parents can also come to make sure it’s a safe place for you to work.

As part of your orientation, ask for a walk-through of the home with the parents to get to know the layout and where important things are located. Confirm with parents:

  • Where to find essentials for babysitting (diapering supplies, food prep items, where kids sleep, etc.)

  • How to call for help

  • Ways to get out of the house in an emergency (and anything that might restrict your ability to get out)

  • A meeting place outside the house if forced outside for a safety reason

Set up your young students for success by offering CABS at your Training Center. You can order your program online through Otis or by calling 1-800-447-3177. To learn more about CABS and download the program specification sheet and sample program pages, click the appropriate button below.
