International Firefighters' Day

May 4 is International Firefighters’ Day, a time to appreciate everything our local professional and volunteer firefighters do to protect our lives, homes and communities.

A tragic accident in 1998 in Australia inspired firefighters there to begin a worldwide campaign for a day of recognition for the sacrifices firefighters are called upon to make in the course of their duties. The organizers chose May 4, the feast day of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters.

As a tribute to those firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, firehouses around the world also participate annually in the “Sound Off,”  happening this year on May 7:

On the first Sunday in May at noon local time let us sound off our fire sirens for 30 seconds followed by a minute’s silence in memory of, and respect for, all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or passed on before us.

This Sunday, if you hear those sirens in your community, join us in taking a moment to appreciate the brave men and women who risk their lives to protect us.

On behalf of our 24-7 Fire team and all of us at HSI, thank you for your service.
