Resolve to Improve Your Emergency Care Training Skills in 2020

Before you finalize your list of New Year’s resolutions, consider adding these to help improve your performance in next year’s ASHI and MEDIC First Aid CPR, AED, and first aid training classes.

Assign yourself a blended learning class in Otis: ASHI and MEDIC First Aid Instructor Guides highly recommend that instructors take the online portion of the blended class they are teaching skills for, in order to be completely familiar with the content. In the Otis Learning area of your instructor portal, we added several new sample blended courses this year, including High-Performance CPR, CABS, and Advanced Bleeding Control. Learn more here.

Improve your group practice sessions: Group practice allows students to use both cognitive understanding and hands-on practice to develop the effective psychomotor skills they need to deliver safe, effective emergency care. Think of your facilitation approach to these sessions as a fluid and ongoing experience that requires constant feedback, evaluation, and adjustment. For tips on skill demonstrations, pre-class prep, and managing your sessions, click here. Be sure to download HSI’s “The Art of Teaching Hands-On Skills” infographic as well.

Use program Key Points and Knowledge Checks to keep your classroom discussions interesting and on-topic: A well-recognized principle of adult learning is the significant life experience and knowledge adults bring to the classroom. And here is a not-so-hidden secret; adults like to be given the opportunity to draw on those moments and share them. A good instructor facilitates those opportunities for her or his students through classroom discussion. Learn how here.

Help take the mystery out of when to call EMS: We tell our students, “if you suspect a medical emergency has occurred, activate EMS.” But sharing some of the basic concepts behind that statement can help build the confidence students need to get actually involved in a medical emergency. We lay them out for you here.

Our instructors are at the heart of everything we do, and all of us at ASHI and MEDIC First Aid resolve to bring you even more products, services, and resources in 2020.

Wishing you and your family a very happy new year!
