What's New

WhatsNew_555x375Introducing the New Desktop Video Player

Streaming our program videos is a great option for content delivery, but what if your classroom doesn’t have internet access? Or if your new laptop doesn’t have a drive to play our program DVDs?  We’re pleased to introduce a new offline media player option for delivering ASHI and MEDIC First Aid programs in your classes. The HSI Instructor Desktop Video Player (DVP) allows instructors to download saved playlists of our program videos onto a computer to play later when there is no internet connectivity. This tool is available to Training Center directors and instructors, and playlists are available to TC directors and any instructor to whom Digital Instructor Rights have been granted.

There are now three options to present video content to your classes without having to rely on program DVDs:

  • HSI Instructor Desktop Video Player (for Windows or Mac desktop/laptop computers)
  • Video streaming via Otis (requires internet connection)
  • HSI Instructor Mobile App (for Smartphones or tablets)

Desktop Video Player

You will need to log in to Otis initially to download and install the DVP. Once you have the player installed, and while connected to the internet:

  1. Open HSI Instructor DVP and log in (using same username and password as Otis)
        a. Upon first login, it may take a few moments to load
        b. You will see a list of playlists available to you
  2. Download playlists you want to save to your computer
  3. Once download is complete, you can play the video playlist while online or offline with no internet connection

Click here to see a video preview of the desktop video player.

Video Streaming

While connected to the internet, simply select “Play” on the right side of your Otis screen for the playlist you want to play.

Mobile App

We offer Apple iOS and Android versions for your convenience. Search for HSI Instructor in the App store for your mobile device. You must have an internet connection for streaming video or to initially download video playlists for offline use.

Important Note: Digital Instructor Rights

Instructors must have digital instructor rights assigned to them for the video playlists they are going to access using any of our non-DVD delivery options.

With the purchase of each qualifying G2015 program package, the Training Center receives five digital rights that can be distributed to instructors affiliated to your TC. Digital rights give access to our streaming, mobile, and offline delivery options.

The TC Director must assign digital rights:

  1. Log in to Otis and go to the Organization menu from the left navigation
  2. Choose the Instructor option from the sub-menu
  3. Click on Digital Rights (Note: you must have at least one authorized instructor in your TC, and you must have purchased a qualifying G2015 program package.)

You will see a selection menu with the available programs that have digital rights credits. Below this menu will be a list of instructors (under "No Digital Rights") who can be assigned access, and on the right, a list of instructors who currently have digital rights (under "Digital Rights").

  • Select the program from the drop-down menu.
  • Click the instructor name(s) from the left-side list to move them to the right-side box (or click "Add All" to move all the names in the list) and click Save Changes.
  • To remove instructor rights, select the instructor name from the Digital Rights column on the right (or click "Remove All" to revoke all rights) and click Save Changes.

For more support information on assigning rights, log in to your TC Portal and go to Help and Support>Browse Help Topics>Digital Tools Set-up>Digital Rights Management.

For in-depth instructions on accessing and using any of our program delivery options, select “Video Player” on the left-hand navigation in Otis, then select “Click here to learn more.”

To play program videos (either by streaming through Otis or playing on the DVP), the TC director must first create the video playlists their instructors will use. Learn how to set up your playlists in our Helpful Hints article in this month’s newsletter.

Helpful Hints

TechSupport_555x375Creating Video Playlists

Before you play your training program videos using streaming in Otis or the desktop or mobile apps, you will need to set up some video playlists.

It’s not hard to set up your lists; just follow the steps below:

  1. Click Video Player from the left-side navigation in Otis.
  2. Click the New Playlist button (in blue, on the top right of page) to create a new custom playlist.
  3. Under the "Core Program" drop-down list, choose the qualifying G2015 course you want to customize.
  4. Fill in a title that is relevant to you and your instructors.
  5. Once the Core Program is chosen, a list of video segments will display. All non-required video segments are marked by a toggle set to ON by default.
  6. To customize your video playlist if you do not want to include optional video segments, scroll through the list and set any non-required items to OFF.
  7. When finished with customization, click Save Playlist at the bottom of the window. The playlist will be saved and displayed on the front page of the Video Player link.
  8. Click Play to start the custom stream. It will open into a new window.
  9. Click the down-arrow next to the Play button to edit the custom set-up and include or remove non-required modules.

You can also find these instructions within the Otis system at Help and Support>Browse Help Topics>Digital Tools Set-up>Video Player-Custom Program Video.

Please check with a Client Services representative at 800-447-3177 if you have any questions or do not see the video for the program you have purchased.

Survey image_newsletterThanks for Your Responses

A big thank you to everyone who responded to our newsletter survey. We’re making some changes based on your suggestions. Going forward, we’ll be publishing the newsletter on a monthly basis as 61% of you requested, and we’ll be adding a new Teaching Tips feature starting in October. We will continue to lead our newsletter issues with the "What's New" section whenever appropriate, with 85% of respondents saying that was the most important section to them.

We’ve read through all your open-ended comments and have shared them with HSI’s production, I.T., customer service, and tech support teams as appropriate. We appreciate your suggestions and have considered all of them. Some can be implemented, while there may be reasons we cannot move forward with others at this time.

We were thrilled and overwhelmed by the amount of great comments and questions in the survey. Unfortunately, because the survey was anonymous, we are unable to respond directly to specific questions and comments. If you would like to submit a question or comment to the ASHI and MEDIC First Aid management team, please click the link below to email us directly and we will be in touch soon.

Whether through the newsletter, at our tradeshow appearances, or on our corporate social media pages, we always look forward to connecting with our instructors and TC directors and want to ensure that you have the access and support you need.

Program Focus

ProgramFocus_newsletterTop 5 Reasons for Using Our High-Performance CPR Programs

The ASHI and MEDIC First Aid High-Performance CPR training programs bring the proven HPCPR concepts and skills used in EMS to those most likely to initiate resuscitation in an emergency, such as law enforcement officers, correctional officers, lifeguards, emergency response team members, and workplace first aid providers. Combined with LOOP, a CPR feedback device from HSI, you have all you need to improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest at your organization.

Experts agree that the quality of resuscitation matters when it comes to surviving sudden cardiac arrest.

For most CPR providers, there is a gap between knowing how to perform CPR and their actual ability to perform it. Narrowing this gap as much as possible is the key to improving survival.

High-performance CPR (HPCPR) is the recommended approach to help achieve this. HPCPR combines a practiced team approach, guided by real-time feedback, along with high-quality CPR skills, helping providers to do what they already know, better.

HPCPR protocols are rapidly being adopted by hospitals, EMS agencies, and fire departments with great results. The HPCPR program allows you to do the same for pre-EMS providers.

Here are the top 5 reasons to consider using the program:

It’s Current – HPCPR is one of the fastest growing focuses within EMS agencies and is showing remarkable results. The ASHI and MEDIC First Aid HPCPR programs integrate the same concepts and skills of HPCPR used by EMS, for use by those initiating CPR prior to the arrival of EMS.

It’s Proven – The latest survival rate from SCA in Seattle and King County, Washington, an area where HPCPR in EMS has been a huge focus is over 60%! The HPCPR programs can help to bring the same influence on SCA survival to your organization.

It’s Flexible – The HPCPR programs were designed for use by a wide variety of users with varying levels of experience and equipment. The programs also encourage the use of local modifications that help improve SCA care. Combine the HPCPR programs with any CPR or BLS program to create more comprehensive training, or use it as standalone training for those already trained in CPR.

It’s Economical – Just like our other great instructor-led training programs, the HPCPR programs use low-cost instructor and student training materials for use in the classroom. If you are already a CPR or BLS instructor, you are eligible to purchase and use the instructional materials… no additional instructor training required.

It’s Effective – Interactive delivery and review of cognitive information along with plenty of hands-on skills practice will improve the quality of skills and the efficiency of working together as a team. Short, ongoing, scenario-based skill practice sessions will help to maintain a high-quality ability to respond to an SCA emergency.
